Two South African ice plants from this genus are commonly sold. Leaves of both are covered by glistening dots that look like ice crystals; and both also have flowers with many narrow petals, bloom in late spring and early summer, and endure poor soil.

From South Africa. Grows to 6 in. tall, but stems trail to considerable length or drape over rocks, walls. Best ice plant for reducing erosion on steep slopes (plant 1 1/2 ft. apart). Pale pink, 3/4 -in.-wide flowers form shimmering sheets of bloom, attract bees. Often sold as Drosanthemum hispidum.
