Large, cylindrical cacti with prominent ribs and stout thorns. Many are native to the Southwest. Best known in gardens is E. grusonii, golden barrel, a Mexican cactus of slow growth to 4 ft. tall and 2 1/2 ft. in diameter. With age, the plant often produces offsets to form clumps 6 ft. across. Showy, stiff, yellow, 3-in. spines; yellow, 1 1/2–2-in. flowers appear at the top of the plant in summer. Protect from hard frosts. Water every couple of weeks in summer.
