Numerous kinds of large, cyclindrical cacti with prominent ribs and stout thorns. Many are native to the Southwest.

Echinocactus grusonii

Best known in gardens. A Mexican cactus of slow growth to 4 ft. high, 2 1/2 ft. in diameter. With age, often produces offsets to form clumps 6 ft. across. Showy, stiff, yellow 3-in. spines; yellow, 1 1/2 – 2-in. flowers at top of plant in summer. Protect from hard frosts. Water every couple of weeks in summer.
