Small, spiny cacti from South America, generally grown in pots. Enormous number of species, hybrids, and selections; genus now includes plants formerly named Lobivia and Lobivopsis, and still often sold under those names. All are showy and easy to grow, with many-petaled flowers in white and shades of yellow, pink, red, and orange. Free blooming during warm months if given good light, regular moisture from spring to fall, and fast-draining soil. Give little or no water in winter.
Grows to 4 in. high, 1 to 2 ft. wide. The cylindrical, ribbed, 2 to 3-in. joints fall off easily and root just as easily; even tiny ones produce flowers. Blooms are bright scarlet, nearly 3 in. long. Great favorite with children.
