Eranthis hyemalis
Winter Aconite
Ranunculaceae
Bulbs and bulblike plants, Perennials
Native to Europe, Asia. Charming plant that reaches 2 to 8 in. high, blooming in late winter or early spring. Single yellow flowers resembling buttercups are about 1 1/2 in. wide, with five to nine petallike sepals; each bloom sits on a single, deeply lobed, bright green leaf that looks like a ruff. Round basal leaves divided into narrow lobes emerge immediately after the flowers bloom. All traces of the plant disappear by the time summer arrives.
