Ferocactus cylindraceus

Native to Southern California, Nevada, Arizona, and Baja California, this barrel cactus grows slowly to 8 or 9 ft. tall, 3 ft. wide. Yellow to orange, bell-shaped flowers, 3 in. across, bloom midspring into summer. Plant grows faster on its shady side than on sunny side, producing a curve toward the south.

Ferocactus wislizenii

Native to Arizona, Texas, and Mexico. Grows to 8–9 ft. tall and 3 ft. wide, with yellow or yellow-edged red flowers in summer.
