Medium to large cacti. Ribbed and formidably spiny; globular when young, cylindrical with increasing age.

Native to Southern California, Nevada, Arizona, Baja California, this barrel cactus grows slowly to 8 or 9 ft. tall, 3 ft. wide. Yellow to orange, bell-shaped flowers, 3 in. across, bloom midspring into summer. Plant grows faster on its shady side than on sunny side, producing curve toward the south.
