FEROCACTUS

Medium to large cactus prized for their interesting shape and showy flowers. Ribbed and formidably spiny, they are globular when young, cylindrical with increasing age.

Ferocactus cylindraceus

Native to Southern California, Nevada, Arizona, and Baja California, this barrel cactus grows slowly to 8 or 9 ft. tall, 3 ft. wide. Yellow to orange, bell-shaped flowers, 3 in. across, bloom midspring into summer. Plant grows faster on its shady side than on sunny side, producing a curve toward the south.
