From Central America. This annual has white, pink, lavender, or purple flower heads on 1–2-ft. stems. ‘All Around Purple’ is compact and bushy. Magenta-pink ‘Fireworks’ is open growing and soft-looking; good for a cottage garden or large border. Dwarf varieties for edging or bedding include 6–in. ‘Buddy’ (deep reddish purple) and ‘Gnome Series’ (mixed colors); these can be planted closely in large containers—six to a shallow 10-in. pot—for a long-lasting living bouquet.
