Habranthus robustus

Amaryllidaceae
Bulbs and bulblike plants, Perennials

HABRANTHUS

Native from Texas to Argentina, where these bulbous perennials sprout and flower almost immediately after ground has been moistened by summer rainfall. Grassy foliage and trumpet- to funnel-shaped blossoms similar to those of fairy lily (Zephyranthes), a close relative. Usually one blossom per stem.

Plant in spring, in well-drained soil; set bulbs with tops at soil level and space 3 in. apart. If you live in a frost-free climate and can withhold moisture for about a month after flowering is over, you may get another bloom cycle in fall. Use in rock gardens or naturalize. Plantings don’t need dividing for many years. Where soil freezes, grow in pots.

Habranthus robustus

From Argentina. Flowers—sometimes two to a stem—usually bloom before leaves emerge. Light pink, 3-in. blossoms with green throats and deeper pink veining are carried on 9-in. stems.
