Heptacodium miconioides

Seven Sons Flower
Deciduous, Shrubs, Trees, Decorative fruit or berries

This fountain-shaped shrub from China grows to 15–20 ft. tall and 8–10 ft. wide. Large, narrowly heart-shaped leaves are shiny green, deeply veined. Fragrant, creamy white flowers appear in large clusters at branch ends and open over a long bloom season in late summer and fall. Flowers are succeeded by even showier masses of small fruits with bright purplish red calyxes. The common name derives from the number of flowers in each of the clusters forming part of the larger inflorescence. Picturesque even in winter, when the bark is on show: thin, pale tan strips peel away to reveal dark brown bark beneath.
