Howea belmoreana
Sentry Palm
Arecaceae (Palmae)
Palms and cycads
HOWEAThese feather palms are native to Lord Howe Island in the South Pacific. Slow growing; reach full height in tropics but only perhaps half as tall in California, where they are typically planted under other trees for frost protection. With age, finely divided leaves drop to show clean, green trunk ringed with leaf scars. These are the kentia palms of florists’ shops (usually sold there under the name “kentia”) and make ideal potted plants—the classic parlor palms. To minimize spider mite problems, keep fronds clean and dust free. Indoor plants withstand drafts, some watering neglect.
Howea belmoreanaTends to be smaller than Howea forsteriana (grows to 25 ft. tall and 15 ft. wide), with 6- to 7-ft.-long leaves.
