Hypoestes phyllostachya

Freckle Face, Pink Polka-Dot Plant

Grown for its pink-and-white-spotted green leaves, this 1–2-ft. high and 1-ft.-wide foliage plant is grown as a perennial in Hawaii and its native South Africa, but as a summer annual or houseplant on the mainland. Plants bloom very rarely.

‘Splash’ has larger spots. ‘Confetti’ has more, smaller flecks. Pair it with green-leafed plants such as baby’s tears or small ferns. Tip-pinch to make it bushy. Growth can be cut to within an inch or so of the soil in early spring to renew; plants tend to become woody and need replacing every few years.
