Native to Japan. Forms an upright clump 1–2 ft. tall and 1 ft. wide. In spring, leaves emerge medium green at the base, red at the tip; red color extends along the leaf and intensifies in summer and fall. The top half or more of each leaf may be brilliant red. Striking in borders, especially where the sun can shine through the blades. Rarely (if ever) flowers.
