Ischyrolepis subverticillata

Broom Restio
Restionaceae
Evergreen, Perennials

Resembling a big, clumping horsetail (Equisetum hyemale), this reedlike South African plant can reach 8 ft. tall and 4 ft. wide. Erect or slightly arching, canelike stems hold whorls of long, thin leaves at evenly spaced nodes. Insignificant flowers appear at branch tips in late summer; small, silvery, showy seed heads follow on female plants. Remove outer stems every 2 or 3 years to rejuvenate plant. Good in large pots. Stems are excellent in cut-flower arrangements.
