Lapageria rosea

Chilean Bellflower
Liliaceae
Evergreen, Vines

The national flower of Chile. Likes high humidity, moderate summer temperatures. Slender stems twine to 10–20 ft. Glossy, leathery, oval leaves to 4 in. long. Blooms off and on through late spring, summer, and fall. Beautiful, 3-in.-long, rosy red, pendent, bell-shaped flowers (frequently spotted with white) have unusually heavy, waxy texture; hold up as long as 2 weeks after cutting. Good vine for post, trellis, or tree trunk. Give it wind protection and loose, well-drained, organically enriched soil. Protect from snails and slugs.
