Laurus nobilis

Sweet Bay, Grecian Laurel
Evergreen, Herbs, Shrubs, Trees

This Mediterranean native grows slowly to 12–40 ft. tall and wide. Natural habit is compact and multistemmed, with a broad base; the plant often resembles a gradually tapering cone. Leathery, aromatic leaves are the traditional bay leaves of cookery—oval, 2–4 in. long, and dark green. Clusters of small yellow spring flowers are followed by black or dark purple, 1/2–1-in. fruit.

‘Saratoga’ has broader leaves than the species and a more treelike habit.
