From eastern and central North America. Showy bloomer grows to 4 ft. tall and 1 1/2 ft. wide. Basal tufts of grassy leaves grow from thick, often tuberous rootstocks. In summer, tufts lengthen into tall stems densely set with leaves and topped by “foxtails” of small light purple flowers with prominent stamens. Blossom spikes open from the top downward.
