Trunk and limbs resemble those of madrone (Arbutus menziesii), with reddish brown bark flaking off to reveal smooth, light-colored bark beneath. Oval, leathery bright green leaves are 4 to 6 in. long, tend to cluster at tips of branchlets. White to cream colored, 3/4-in. flowers in clusters of three to seven appear in summer, followed by woody capsules like those of eucalyptus.
