LYCHNIS

These old-fashioned garden flowers all tolerate poor soils. The different kinds vary in appearance, but all come in eye-catching colors.

Lychnis chalcedonica

From Russia. Loose, open form. Grows to 2–3 ft. high and 1 ft. wide. Leaves and stems are hairy; scarlet, 1/2-in. flowers with deeply cut petals are borne in dense terminal clusters. Particularly effective in large borders alongside white-flowered or gray-foliaged plants.
