Lysiloma watsonii

Feather Bush, Fern-of-the-Desert
Fabaceae (Leguminosae)
Deciduous, Evergreen, Shrubs, Trees

Native to the foothills of Arizona’s Rincon Mountains. Grows to 12–15 ft. tall and wide, with multiple stems and a broad canopy of finely cut bright green leaves somewhat like those of acacia. Blooms in late spring or early summer, bearing masses of 1/2–1-in.-wide, creamy white, clustered flowers like little puffballs emerging from round buds. These are followed by flat, ridged brown seedpods 4–8 in. long. Good informal background shrub, patio tree (can be trained to a single stem), or transition plant between garden and desert.
