Grown for attractive, leathery foliage and showy flowers with prominent stamens. Best near the coast, where it tolerates wind and salt spray. Grow in well-drained soil. Sensitive to frost.

Metrosideros polymorpha

Native to Hawaii. Slow-growing, highly variable plant; may form a small, erect to prostrate shrub or grow as a tree up to 100 ft. tall. The foliage is also variable, as are the flowers, which are produced throughout the year. Blossoms are commonly red but are also seen in white and shades of orange, pink, and yellow; they are used in leis.
