Species is native to eastern North America, Eurasia. Its colorful selection ‘Aureum’ forms a clump to 2 ft. high and wide. Bright greenish gold leaves first grow erect, then take on arching, weeping form. Foliage is brightest in spring, turns light green by summer. Effective for a spot of color in a woodland garden or shaded rock garden. Does best where summers are cool or mild; in hotter regions, goes partially dormant in summer. Seedlings usually have yellow foliage, though color may vary.
