Aromatic mint-family perennials native to California and adjacent states. Typically sprawling, with two-lipped flowers in clusters at stem ends. All require excellent drainage. Use in wild gardens or rock gardens.

Monardella macrantha

Grows to 6 in. high and 1 ft. wide. Stems of shiny dark green leaves sprawl, turn up at ends to show tight, 1–1 1/2-in. clusters of bright red, 1 1/2-in.-long flowers in late spring and summer. ‘Marian Sampson’ is a vigorous disease-resistant selection.
