MUHLENBERGIA

Narrow-leafed grasses that are large enough and showy enough to stand out in the garden. Except as noted, they are evergreen in mild winters but turn tan or brown with hard freezes. They are very drought-tolerant plants but look better and grow larger if given some supplemental water.

Muhlenbergia dumosa

Native to Arizona and Mexico. Grows to 3–6 ft. high and wide. Resembles bamboo, with slender, woody stems set with narrow bright green leaves to about 3 in. long. Branching flower clusters appear in spring; blossoms are barely distinguishable from foliage.
