Myrsine africana

African Boxwood
Myrsinaceae
Evergreen, Shrubs

Native to the Azores, Africa, Himalayas, and China. This shrub grows to 3–8 ft. tall and 2 1/2–6 ft. wide. The form is slightly floppy when young, but the plant stiffens as it matures into a dense, rounded bush that is easily kept to 3–4 ft. with pinching and pruning. Erect-growing dark red stems are closely set with very dark green, glossy, rounded, aromatic 1/2-in. leaves. Insignificant flowers. Good choice for low hedges, topiary, foundation plantings, narrow beds, and containers. Cut foliage is attractive in arrangements. Withstands air pollution.
