Native to the Azores, Africa, Himalayas, and China. Shrub grows to 3 to 8 ft. tall and 2 1/2 to 6 ft. wide. Form is slightly floppy when young, but plant stiffens as it matures into a dense, rounded bush that is easily kept to 3 to 4 ft. with pinching and pruning. Erect-growing dark red stems are closely. set with very dark green, glossy, rounded, aromatic 1/2-in. leaves. Insignificant flowers. Good choice for low hedges, topiary, foundation plantings, narrow beds, and containers. Cut foliage is attractive in arrangements. Withstands air pollution.
