Pachypodium lamerei
Madagascar Palm
Apocynaceae
Shrubs
From Madagascar. Not a palm, though it looks something like one, this is an easy-to-grow shrub with an impressive silhouette: it has a spiny, succulent, branched or unbranched trunk topped with a circle of strap-shaped leaves to 1 ft. long and 1 to 4 in. wide. May reach 18 ft. tall and 5 ft. wide in frostless climates. Large, old plants may bloom in summer, bearing lightly fragrant, trumpet-shaped white flowers to 2 in. across; smaller, younger plants seldom bloom. Some people think of older, blooming plants as spiny plumerias. Grow it indoors anywhere.
