Aptenia cordifolia

Aizoaceae
Cacti and succulents, Perennials

This South African native, a relative of ice plant, produces trailing stems to 2 ft. long set with inch-wide, heart-shaped or oval, fleshy bright green leaves. Purplish red, inch-wide flowers bloom in spring and summer. Use it as a low trailer in a rock garden or as a groundcover on a slope; plant 2 ft. apart for rapid coverage. Stems root wherever they touch moist soil, and plants can become invasive, overwhelming neighboring plants and escaping into wildlands. ‘Variegata’ has white-bordered leaves; hybrid ‘Red Apple’ has brighter red flowers.
