Woody vine native to Mexico, Central America, and the West Indies. Twines to 20–40 ft. but can easily be kept smaller. Elliptical deep green leaves to 8 in. long have a sandpapery surface. Stunning floral display: pendent, foot-long clusters of star-shaped, blue-purple, 1 1/2-in.-wide blossoms. Blue calyxes hang on after the petals drop. Main bloom period comes in winter and spring in Hawaii, late spring and summer in California; lesser displays occur at other times during warm weather.

Beautiful plant trained on an arbor or a pergola, along eaves, or on a high wall. Flowers are sometimes used in leis. Grow this vine in organically enriched,moist but well-drained soil. Provide support for climbing stems. Prune and thin growth as needed in winter. Wind resistant. Frost sensitive.
