From China. Grows to 15–20 ft. tall, but can be held to 4–8 ft. New culms emerge green, but turn black in their second year. This is a running bamboo that shows more or less vertical growth. Can be grown in containers. Flexible canes tend to lean over, even to the ground, in heavy rain or snow. Where summers are hot, does best in afternoon shade.
