POLYSTICHUM

Hardy, symmetrical, easy-to-grow plants with evergreen fronds, except in the case of P. braunii. Among the most useful and widely planted ferns; combine well with other plants. Do best in rich, well-drained soil. Use in shady beds, along house walls, and in mixed woodland plantings.

Polystichum acrostichoides

Native to eastern North America. Grows to 1–1 1/2 ft. tall and about 3 ft. wide. Most useful for shaded sites in cold climates, where the dark green foliage makes a fine contrast to snow or to brown dead leaves during the winter holiday season. Stiff fronds remain upright until pushed over by heavy snow or hard frost.
