POLYSTICHUM

Hardy, symmetrical, easy-to-grow plants with evergreen fronds, except in the case of P. braunii. Among the most useful and widely planted ferns; combine well with other plants. Do best in rich, well-drained soil. Use in shady beds, along house walls, and in mixed woodland plantings.

Polystichum setiferum

Native to southern Europe. Many forms, varying from 2–4 1/2 ft. tall and wide. Finely cut fronds give effect of green lace.

Many forms are sold, varying from 2–4 1/2 ft. tall and wide. ‘Congestum Cristatum’ is a 6–12-in.-tall dwarf with upright gray-green fronds. Divisilobum group features named varieties with a particularly lacy appearance. Plantlets form on midribs of older fronds on several types of soft shield fern; these can be detached and planted.
