RHOPALOSTYLIS

From the South Pacific Islands, these feather palms have long, clean trunks marked with closely spaced rings. Moderate growth rate. Best in frost-free gardens.

Rhopalostylis sapida

From New Zealand. Grows to 30 ft. tall and 15 ft. wide. Feathery leaves 4–8 ft. long stand upright from a prominent bulge at the top of the trunk, making the tree look like a giant shaving brush. Good container plant where small space dictates an upright palm. This species requires a cool, moist, subtropical climate, which includes Southern California but excludes the South.
