Russelia equisetiformis

Coral Fountain, Firecracker Plant
Scrophulariaceae
Perennials

This Mexican native grows to 5 ft. tall and wide, with trailing, almost leafless bright green stems that look good spilling from a hanging basket or over the top of a wall. Masses of tubular red flowers appear throughout spring and summer (all year in Hawaii). Tolerates drought, wet soil, and salty soil. Needs regular fertilizing. Hardy to about 32°F (0°C), but comes back vigorously if cut down by frost. Easy to propagate from pencil-size stem cuttings taken in spring. ‘St. Elmo’s Fire’ grows to 6 ft. tall and up to 8 ft. wide; it is more upright than the species, and just as floriferous and trouble-free.
