Schizophragma hydrangeoides
Japanese Hydrangea Vine
Hydrangeaceae
Deciduous, Vines
Native to Korea and Japan. Resembles climbing hydrangea (Hydrangea anomala petiolaris). Climbs by holdfasts to 30 ft. or more. Pointed, tooth-edged, dark green leaves are 3 to 5 in. long. Blooms in summer, producing flat, 8- to 10-in.-wide clusters of white flowers. Like the blossom clusters of lacecap hydrangeas, each of these features tiny fertile flowers surrounded by a ring of sterile ones—but the sterile blossoms of this plant have only a single “petal” (those of hydrangea have four).
