Soleirolia soleirolii

Baby’s Tears, Angel’s Tears
Urticaceae
Ground covers, Perennials

Lush mat-forming groundcover from the western Mediterranean. Grows to 2–4 in. high, spreading indefinitely by creeping stems. Inconspicuous flowers. Stems and tiny leaves are tender, juicy, and easily injured, but aggressive growth repairs damage quickly. Roots easily from pieces of stem and can become an invasive pest. Freezes to black mush in hard frosts but comes back. Cool-looking, neat underplanting for ferns or other shade-loving plants. Can be used to carpet terrariums or the space under greenhouse benches. Plant 10 in. apart for a small-space groundcover. With enough water, tolerates full sun in cooler climates. There is a golden green variety and one with white variegation.
