Spathodea campanulata

African Tulip Tree
Bignoniaceae
Evergreen, Trees

Very showy, fast-growing tree to 40–75 ft. tall and 20–50 ft. wide. Glossy deep green leaves to 1/2 ft. long are divided featherwise into 9 to 19 oblong to ovate leaflets. Clusters of spectacular, tulip-shaped, 4-in. flowers in scarlet to blood red appear at branch ends. In Hawaii, blossoms come throughout the year; on the mainland, bloom is most profuse in spring, but flowers may appear at any time. Give good drainage and a warm site. This tree grows rapidly and blooms young, but it can be devastated by frosts. Likely to attain the size stated above only in truly frost-free locations.
