Stokesia laevis

Stokes’ Aster
Asteraceae (Compositae)

Native to the Southeastern United States. Grows to 2 ft. tall and 1/2 ft. wide, with stiff, erect, much-branched stems. Smooth, firm-textured, medium green leaves, 2–8 in. long, sometimes toothed at the base. Leafy, curved, finely toothed bracts surround tight flower buds; in summer or early fall, these open to 3–4-in., aster-like blooms in blue, purplish blue, or white. Long-lasting cut flowers. Performs best in well-drained soil. Provide winter cover of evergreen boughs in coldest regions. Good in containers.
