Native to the Southeastern United States. To 2 ft. tall, 1/2 ft. wide, with stiff, erect, much-branched stems. Smooth, firm-textured, medium green leaves, 2 to 8 in. long, sometimes toothed at base. Leafy, curved, finely toothed bracts surround tight flower buds; in summer or early fall, these open to 3- to 4-in., aster-like blooms in blue, purplish blue, or white. Longlasting cut flowers. Performs best in well-drained soil. Provide winter cover of evergreen boughs in coldest regions. Good in pots.
