Brazilian native that grows to 50 ft. tall and 20–25 ft. wide, with an exceptionally straight trunk. Arching, glossy bright green, 10–15-ft.-long leaves (they break in high winds). May produce decorative orange dates. Give well-drained soil. In alkaline soils, plants yellow and slowly die. Grows quickly with fertilizer. Subject to mites; wash young plants frequently. Plants are damaged at 25°F (4°C).
