Tipuana tipu
Tipu Tree
Fabaceae (Leguminosae)
Deciduous, Trees, Semi-evergreen
Grows to 25 to 40 ft. tall, 30 to 60 ft. wide (or larger). Has broad, flattened crown that is wider than high, but can be pruned to make a denser, narrower, umbrella-shaped crown. Light green leaves divided into 11 to 21 oblong, 1/2-in.-long leaflets. Blooms from late spring to early summer, bearing clusters of apricot to yellow, sweet pea-shaped flowers; 2 1/2-in. seed pods follow the flowers.
Will not take strongly alkaline conditions but is otherwise not particular about soil. Flowers best in warm-summer areas out of immediate ocean influence. Good street tree or lawn tree. Useful as a shade tree for patio or terrace, though litter from flowers can be a slight nuisance. Hardy to 25°F/-4°C; well-ripened wood will take 18°F/-8°C with minor damage.
