Tipuana tipu

Tipu Tree
Fabaceae (Leguminosae)
Deciduous, Trees, Semi-evergreen

Colorful flowering tree from South America. Grows to 25–40 ft. tall and 30–60 ft. wide (or larger). Has a broad, flattened crown that is wider than high, but can be pruned to make a denser, narrower, umbrella-shaped crown. Light green leaves are divided into 11 to 21 oblong, 1/2-in.-long leaflets. Blooms from late spring to early summer, bearing clusters of apricot to yellow, sweet pea-shaped flowers; 2 1/2-in. seed pods follow the flowers.

Will not take strongly alkaline conditions but is otherwise not particular about soil. Flowers best in warm-summer areas out of immediate ocean influence. Good street tree or lawn tree. Useful as a shade tree for patio or terrace, though litter from flowers can be a slight nuisance. Hardy to 25°F/–4°C; well-ripened wood will take 18°F/–8°C with minor damage.
