Trachycarpus fortunei

Windmill Palm
Arecaceae (Palmae)
Palms and cycads

Medium-size, very hardy fan palm (to 10°F/–12°C or lower). Moderate to fast growth to 30 ft. tall and 10 ft. wide. The trunk is usually thicker at the top than at the bottom and is covered with dense, blackish fiber; as the trunk elongates, fiber falls off its lower portion. Toothed, 1/2-ft. stalks carry 3-ft.-wide leaves. May look untidy in high winds. May be sold as Chamaerops excelsa. Young plants can be grown indoors in bright indirect light; plant them outdoors when they become too big.
