Uncinia rubra
Red Hook Sedge
Cyperaceae
Ornamental grasses and grasslike plants
From the mountains of New Zealand. Stiff, narrow, slightly arching leaves form a tuft 8 to 15 in. tall and wide. Foliage is rich, dark mahogany to bronze green; lovely when backlit. Black, sharply pointed seed heads are produced in summer. Good choice for container, pond, or stream edge. Reseeds a bit, but not enough to be a problem. Dislikes intense heat; mulch to keep roots cool.
