Vetiveria zizanioides

Vetiver
Poaceae (Gramineae)
Ornamental grasses and grasslike plants

A large, coarse grass native to tropical India. Erect growth to 8 ft. tall and 2–4 ft. wide, forming a dense cluster of stiff, narrow leaves, often bent at a point 1–2 ft. below the tips. Seldom flowers. Foliage is light green and takes on attractive bronze tints in cold weather. Historically grown for its massive, fibrous, very fragrant roots, which were woven into mats or distilled for an oil used in perfume. Will grow in just about any type of soil, taking considerable drought or wet conditions—even seasonal flooding. Use in the middle or rear of a perennial border, grow in a large container, or use as a screening plant. Good for erosion control.
