Perennial vine sometimes grown as an annual. Tropical American native that generally resembles pole bean in form and foliage. The flowers are different, though: fragrant, cream to pale purple spring and summer blossoms have lilac or purple markings, twisted keel petals that are coiled like a snail shell—odd and pretty. Twines rapidly to 10–20 ft.; good summer screen or bank cover. Evergreen in frostless areas; in colder regions, cut plant to the ground if frost kills top. Sometimes sold as Phaseolus gigantea.
