Perennials

This South African native forms clumps of long-stalked, shiny rich green, usually arrow-shaped leaves, sometimes spotted in white. Flower bract (spathe) surrounds a central spike (spadix) tightly covered with tiny true flowers.

Zantedeschia aethiopica

Grows to 2–4 ft. tall, with unspotted leaves to 1/2 ft. long and 10 in. wide. In spring (sometimes continuing into summer), pure or creamy white spathes to 8 in. long appear on stems slightly taller than the foliage.

Varieties include robust ‘Green Goddess’, with large spathes that are white at base, green toward tip; and ‘Hercules’, larger than the species, with big spathes that open flat and curve backward. Dwarf types include ‘Childsiana’ (to 1 ft.).
