All except A. gigantea make beautiful velvety lawns under proper conditions and with constant care. They need frequent close mowing and feeding, occasional top-dressing, and much water. In hot weather they succumb to fungal diseases. In San Francisco Bay Area and western Oregon and Washington, bent grasses (planted intentionally or distributed by birds) tend to dominate bluegrasses and fescues.

Premium lawn, but requires the most care, including frequent mowing to 1/2 in. tall with special mower. Seed-grown strains include Emerald, Penncross, and Seaside. In some areas you can buy sprigs or sod of the choice strains Congressional, Old Orchard.
