Embothrium coccineum
Chilean firebush
Proteaceae
Deciduous
Chile. Sometimes a large, suckering shrub of variable habit, sometimes a tree to 50 ft. tall and half as wide. It may be evergreen or deciduous; the latter forms are hardier. All have shiny green leaves that are oblong to narrow, up to 4 1/2 in. long; all put on a showy floral spectacle in late spring or early summer, bearing clusters of long, narrow, brilliant red flowers. E. c. lanceolatum is a narrowleafed semievergreen form. Needs good drainage, acid soil, nonalkaline water, cold-wind protection.
