These handsome Australian natives, relatives of Leptospermumand Melaleuca, are very tolerant of different soil types and watering practices.

One of the best smalltrees for California gardens where temperatures stay above27°F (–3°C). Will freeze to the ground at 25°F (–4°C) but may come back from a stump if notseverely frozen. This spreading, medium-fast grower reaches 25–35 ft. tall and 15–25 ft. wide; narrow, willowlike leaves to 6 in. long densely clothe the weepingbranches. Leaves smell like peppermint when crushed. In late spring, small white flowers bloom profusely. Use it in a lawn, train it as an espalier, or plant it in a large container. ‘Jervis Bay Afterdark’ grows slowly to about 18 ft. tall and 10–15 ft. wide and has beautiful burgundy foliage. ‘Jedda’s Dream’ has the same colorful foliage but is dwarf and bushy, to just 9 ft. tall and 6 ft. wide. ‘Nana’ is like the species, but grows just 3–4 ft. tall and twice as wide; its new leaves are bright red.
