Bromelia balansae

Heart of Flame

Perennials

This South American pineapple relative grows to 4 ft. tall, 4–6 ft. across, with an impressive cluster of 30–50 arching, saw-toothed green leaves that are whitish below. The center leaves turn bright scarlet in spring or early summer, vividly contrasting with dark glossy green leaves below. This gives rise to a spike of white-edged, rose-colored flowers.

Needs warm nights and almost any soil with excellent drainage. Supply light shade in Zone 13. Feed lightly once or twice in summer.
