BUXUSBoxwood (buxus) is widely used for edging and hedging. When not clipped, most are soft and billowing. Inconspicuous flowers. All are easy to grow where adapted. Extra care with watering, feeding, and controlling mites and scale will pay off in better color and greater vigor.
Native to Japan. This species is hardy to -10°F/-23°C but has poor winter appearance in cold-winter areas. Takes dry heat and alkaline soil, but struggles in intense heat, saline soils of desert. Compact; 1/2 to 1-in., round-tipped leaves are a lively bright green in summer, brown or bronze in winter in many areas. Grows slowly 4 to 6 ft. high and wide if not pruned. Most often clipped as hedge or shaped into globes, tiers, pyramids in containers. Can keep to 6 in. tall as border edging.
