CALCEOLARIANative from Mexico to Chile. Loose clusters of small pouchlike or slipperlike flowers, usually yellow but sometimesred-bronze or spotted with redor orange-brown. Bloom inspring and summer. Plants have dark green, crinkly leaves.

Plantsare usually grown from seedsown in spring or summer inlight, porous soil; they are ready for final potting or planting out in fall. Calceolaria can reach a height of 2 1/2 ft., but some strains reach only 9–15 in. high, 6–12 in. wide. Even where plants winter over, they are usually discarded after flowering. Give bedding and outdoor potted plants partial or full shade.
